The CEO of a Polish paving company "unequivocally" apologized Monday after he was seen on a viral video taking a hat signed by tennis player Kamil Majchrzak from a child during the U.S. Open in New York City. Piotr Szczerek, the CEO of paving company Drogbruk, was caught on video grabbing a signed hat that it appeared Majchrzak was trying to hand to a child. Video of the incident went viral over the weekend after the Polish tennis star defeated Russia's Karen Khachanov on Thursday. "I would like to unequivocally apologize to the young boy, his family, all the fans, and the player himself,"Szczerek said in a poston social media on Monday. "I take full responsibility for my extremely poor judgment and hurtful actions." Szczerek said in the statement it was "never my intent" to take the hat from a young fan, but that he "became caught up in the heat of the moment and the joy of the victory, and I believed Majchrzak was handing a hat to me to give to my sons, who had previously asked for autographs." "Regardless of what I believed was happening, the actions I took hurt the young boy and disappointed the fans," he said. Szczerek said he has sent the hat to the boy and extended an apology to his family. "I believe I did what most of athletes would do in this kind of situation," Majchrzak said in an email to NBC News, adding that he hoped the boy and his family ultimately had a great day. On Saturday,Majchrzak shared a photo of himself with the boyon his Instagram story, writing, "Hello World, Together with Brock we wish you a great day!" In another Instagram story, he shared a photo of himself giving gifts and swag to the young fan. Drogbruk did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

NEW YORK (AP) — Venus Williams is into theU.S. Openwomen's doubles quarterfinals with Leylah Fernandez and now wants her old partner to come back. She says it's time for Serena Williams to come see a match. Williams made the plea for her younger sister to show up aftershe and Fernandezbeat the 12th-seeded duo of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-4 in their third-round match Monday in front of a capacity crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium. "She's so happy for Leylah and I, and she's given us advice," Williams said. "We just need her in the box. So, my message is, 'Serena, you need to show up.'" Williams and Fernandez will play Tuesday against the top-seeded team ofTaylor Townsendand Katerina Siniakova. The Williams sisters won 14 major championships together. Even if Serena chooses not to attend, she's definitely watching. "She gave me a pep talk and made sure to call me today. I was, like, 'You're right. I got it. I got it,'" Venus said. "She's definitely coaching from afar. She's so excited. She gets so nervous watching, and she's got the kids watching. They're all at home, just really on our side." Venus said she was sent a video of her two nieces watching the match and yelling her name. Williams and Fernandez had not played together until last week, when theyreceived a wild-card entryinto the field at the Grand Slam tournament. They are now 3-0and have not lost a set in the process. "We're on the same wavelength, and hopefully we can keep it going," Williams said. With the stands packed at Armstrong and a wait to get in to see Williams and Fernandez, the 45-year-old American and 22-year-old Canadian needed just an hour and 14 minutes to move on. "I have full confidence in Venus, and I hope she has full confidence in me during our match," Fernandez said. "We're just going out there, playing our game: Be offensive, aggressive and ready for the ball." Venus has called Fernandez her best partner other than Serena. She joked that Serena didn't have any advice for Fernandez, the 2021 U.S. Open runner-up in singles. "So I guess you're playing perfect," Williams said to her partner during their press conference. Serena hasn't played since the 2022 U.S. Open. If she does return to Flushing Meadows, it sounds as if Venus would expect her to bring a racket. "If she came, it would be a dream for both of us and we'd have her on the court coaching.," Venus said. "We'd force her to hit, even though she doesn't hit often. It's probably best she doesn't come because we'd probably bully her." ___ AP tennis:https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

Final preparations for trial of man accused of attempting to assassinate Trump in FloridaNew Foto - Final preparations for trial of man accused of attempting to assassinate Trump in Florida

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — A man charged withtrying to assassinatePresidentDonald Trumplast year in South Florida is set to represent himself during a pretrial conference on Tuesday, as final preparations are made for trial. Barring any delays, jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in Fort Pierce federal court for the case against Ryan Routh. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon signed off onRouth'srequest to represent himself in July but said court-appointed attorneys need to remain as standby counsel. The trial will begin nearly a year after prosecutors say a U.S. Secret Service agent thwarted Routh's attempt to shoot Trump as he played golf. Routh, 59, has pleaded not guilty to charges ofattempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer and several firearm violations. Prosecutors have said Routh methodically plotted to kill Trump for weeks before aiming a rifle through the shrubbery as Trump played golf on Sept. 15, 2024, at his West Palm Beach country club. A Secret Service agent spotted Routh before Trump came into view. Officials said Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot. Law enforcement obtained help from a witness who prosecutors said informed officers that he saw a person fleeing. The witness was then flown in a police helicopter to a nearby interstate where Routh was arrested, and the witnesses confirmed it was the person he had seen, prosecutors have said. Routh was a North Carolina construction worker who in recent years had moved to Hawaii. A self-styled mercenary leader, Routh spoke out to anyone who would listen about his dangerous, sometimes violent plans to insert himself into conflicts around the world, witnesses have told The Associated Press. In the early days of thewar in Ukraine, Routh tried to recruit soldiers from Afghanistan, Moldova and Taiwan to fight the Russians. In his native Greensboro, North Carolina, he had a 2002 arrest for eluding a traffic stop and barricading himself from officers with a fully automatic machine gun and a "weapon of mass destruction," which turned out to be an explosive with a 10-inch-long fuse. In 2010, police searched a warehouse Routh owned and found more than 100 stolen items, from power tools and building supplies to kayaks and spa tubs. In both felony cases, judges gave Routh either probation or a suspended sentence. In addition to the federal charges, Routh also has pleaded not guilty to state charges of terrorism and attempted murder.

Kremlin hawk Patrushev urges Japan to halt 'militarisation' towards Russia, ChinaNew Foto - Kremlin hawk Patrushev urges Japan to halt 'militarisation' towards Russia, China

(Reuters) -One of the Kremlin's most senior hawks, Nikolai Patrushev, hopes that Japan will stop pursuing a policy of militarisation toward Russia and China, he said in remarks published on Tuesday, voicing concerns that NATO could use its fleet in combat. A former KGB officer and a Cold War warrior who crafted the Kremlin's national security strategy, Patrushev said, without providing evidence, that NATO intends to use the Japanese fleet to conduct combat operations in parts of the world. "One would like to believe that common sense will prevail among the Japanese elites, and they will stop pursuing a suicidal policy of militarisation and rattling weapons at two of the most powerful neighbouring states — Russia and China," he told news outlet Argumenty I Fakty. "But as long as this continues, we certainly cannot sit idly by." The remarks come as Russian President Vladimir Putin makes a rare four-day trip to China to attend a military parade on Tiananmen Square on Wednesday marking the end of World War Two after Japan's formal surrender. Ahead of the massive public display of China's modernising armed forces, Beijing has mounted a campaign saying that China and the former Soviet Union played a pivotal role in the Asian and European theatres during World War Two. Ties between China and Russia serve as a "source of stability for world peace", President Xi Jinping said last week. Russia and Japan never signed a formal World War II peace treaty, with the main obstacle being an unresolved territorial dispute over the Kuril Islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories. "The Japanese Navy closely cooperates with the NATO fleet; at any moment, they can be integrated into Western coalition formats," Patrushev said. Padres reliever Jason Adam carted off field with ruptured quadriceps tendonNew Foto - Padres reliever Jason Adam carted off field with ruptured quadriceps tendon

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Padres reliever Jason Adam ruptured a tendon in his left quadriceps and was carted off the field Monday, a major blow to San Diego's dominant bullpen. Adam was injured in the seventh inning ofa 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. One of several All-Star relievers on the team, Adam said he still needs to get an MRI for confirmation "but that sounds like six to nine months, so the season's probably done." The injury comes as the Padres are chasing the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The loss dropped the Padres 2 1/2 games behind the idle Dodgers. San Diego currently holds the second National League wild-card spot. The Padres became the first big league team to send three relievers to the All-Star Game when Adam, closer Robert Suarez and left-hander Adrián Morejón were selected for the Midsummer Classic. Among general manager A.J. Preller's several trade-deadline pickups was hard-throwing Mason Miller from the Athletics, who was an All-Star in 2024. "I told A.J., I'm really glad you went out and got Mason," said Adam, who was on crutches with his left leg in a big brace when he spoke with reporters. "That's all I've really processed. This bullpen's so deep. Of all the bullpens in the league to not need me, it's this one. So I'm excited to cheer those guys on. It's a family out there, so I'm excited." Adam collapsed as he tried to turn toward Gunnar Henderson's chopper that went off the mound for an infield single. He immediately signaled for an athletic trainer and grabbed his left knee. After receiving attention from trainers, Adam was helped to his feet and onto a cart, with his left leg propped up on the seat. Cameras caught Adam saying he "felt something pop." "I felt the pop right away, felt like the quad rolled up, so I kind of knew it wasn't good," Adam said. "It was in pain at first and then you kind of come to and you're like, 'Hey, did we get the out?' And then it's just waiting to hear how long." Adam said he "went to plant to go back and grab the ball, because it was kind of a chopper to my right, and that's when I felt the pop and it kind of gave out and I fell." Adam (8-4) took the loss. He has a 1.93 ERA in 65 appearances. The game was tied at 3 when Henderson's hit put runners on first and second. Adam was replaced by Suarez, who got the second out of the inning before allowing Dylan Beavers' go-ahead single. Miller called Adam's injury "really heartbreaking." "You hate to see anybody go down with anything, especially something like that. It's just a baseball oddity, a slow-hit ball like that. It's nothing he did, just his instincts taking over," Miller said. "In his absence, guys are going to have to step up and fill that role. We certainly have guys like that." Said starter Dylan Cease: "It seems like he pitches every day. He's been amazing. It's terrible to see." Padres manager Mike Shildt called Adam "an absolute workhorse" who has "gotten huge outs for us." Shildt also said Adam is a leader in the clubhouse. "We've got a great clubhouse. We've got great dudes. I love him to death. Jason is as solid a guy as there is. He's well-respected and means a lot to us. We'll miss him and we'll have to figure it out," Shildt said. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb
