Rory McIlroy’s PGA Tour schedule included 14 events, including the majors, which technically falls short of a key rule on the American circuit.
McIlroy will be one tournament short of the 15-event minimum required for players to maintain home-tour status. Without this status, he would be required to obtain conflicting event releases to compete on the European Tour while maintaining membership on the PGA Tour.
McIlroy, who is competing in his 14th event this season at East Lake in Atlanta, does hold a lifetime membership exemption on the PGA Tour, however, after reaching 30 wins. The 15-event rule also may be changed thanks to a format reset for 2028 under CEO Brian Rolapp.

“I think I've had conversations with Rory. Rory's dedication to the PGA Tour is clear to me. I think he feels passionately, and is certainly dedicated to it,” Rolapp said at the Tour Championship.
McIlroy has championed the tour in the years since LIV Golf was established, as the 37-year-old was quick to critique the world-wide circuit that now faces a possible shutdown. Since then, however, the world No. 2 has talked about shortening his schedule for work-life balance as well as playing in Europe, and Rolapp backed him up.

“He also feels a dedication to the DP World Tour as well given his legacy and where he's from,” said Rolapp. “We certainly have a strategic alliance with the DP World Tour which we are actively working to improve and change and extend. We continue to have those conversations.”

If McIlroy were to lose tour status, he would be limited to seven sponsor exemptions per season as a non-member. With the two-series format being implemented in 2028, Rolapp said the home-tour rule is under scrutiny.
“I think in my position, I have a fair amount of discretion on this matter in the bylaws,” said Rolapp. “I think having Rory participating in Memphis was great, and he continues to be here at the Tour Championship.”

McIlroy has played in each of the three playoff events this year, and noted at the BMW Championship he was trying to remember the last time he played two weeks in a row, adding, "it's been awhile."
“I think we are questioning looking at it,” said Rolapp. “It's a rule that applies just to dual members. It's questionable if it even has a place in our new competitive model.
“I think it's one of many rules and regulations we will look at as we change the competitive model.”
